40 GHz Mode-Locked SOA Fiber Ring Laser with 20 nm Tuning Range

چکیده
High repetition rate, picosecond laser sources are key elements for WDM/OTDM transmission, switching and photonic network systems. Active mode-locking is one of the main techniques for the generation of transform limited, high repetition rate, short pulse trains. It is particularly appropriate for applications that require precise timing synchronization between the optical and electrical signals such as digital all-optical logic [1]. The majority of tunable, actively mode-locked laser sources demonstrated so far at 1.5 m have used erbium doped fiber for gain with lithium niobate modulators to mode-lock and nonlinear compression techniques for pulse shortening [2]. These sources have demonstrated impressive performance but they are relatively complex requiring special attention to ensure stability against environmental perturbations due to their long and polarization dependent cavities. Monolithic laser diodes have also been shown to mode-lock at high repetition rates over broad tuning ranges [3] and they have been used for short pulse generation with injection mode-locking [4]. These however are research devices and they are not widely available.

20-GHz broadly tunable and stable mode-locked semiconductor amplifier fiber ring laser.
We present an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser that uses a single active semiconductor optical amplifier device to provide both gain and gain modulation from an external optical pulse train. The laser source generated 4.3-ps pulses at 20 GHz over a 16-nm tuning range and is stable against environmental changes and simple to build.

We demonstrate a novel approach for generating a stable and low polarization-sensitive mode-locked fiber ring laser by using a low-cost Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) as both the intracavity mode-locker and the band-pass filter. The FPLD pulses is seeded into a close-loop semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based fiber ring laser for harmonic and rational harmonic mode-locking operation. The ...

We demonstrate a stable and tunable single-longitudinal-mode SOA-EDF ring laser for high-speed data transmission systems. The laser is constructed by incorporating an SOA into the EDF ring cavity. The SOA acts as a saturable absorption high-pass filter to suppress cavity mode partition noise at low frequencies. Such design ensures a stable and single-frequency operation for more than several ho...
